Buhurt 101 Helmets: The Nasal Bascinet

The most important part of your armored kit is your helmet!

medieval helmet cut by sword

Protecting the head and the brain inside it means you’ll get up and fight again the next day.

Your head is the most heavily armored part of your body in Buhurt with a minimum of 2.0mm tempered steel as a starting point.

We recommend a minimum of 2.5mm but prefer 3.0mm tempered steel to make sure your helm is absolutely bomb proof.

There’s been some debate in the past about mild steel vs tempered steel. We don’t trust mild steel helmets, nor do we recommend them, or any fighter with the Cincinnati Barbarians own one. Crumple factor is not a valid argument on something that will take repeated abuse over years that you are trusting your life too.

Inside every helmet is a comfort liner and modern anti concussion padding. If someone tells you to not add anti concussion padding to your helmet they are not a good person. Pass your helmets please. We will do a video on good helmet padding in the future!

There are tons of helmets available for Buhurt of various designs. This series is a reference to a lot of those designs, but not all of them. All have their pros and their cons, costs etc. we will be ranking them on the following categories:

  • Vision

  • Breathability

  • Repair needs

  • Cost

  • Style

We will also include source pictures of helmets from period artwork for easy reference to show they are historically accurate and what time period they belong to!

Without further ado let’s jump into Buhurt 101: Helmets with our first Helmet: The Nasal Bascinet!

First up is the Nasal Bascinet

Nasal Knights Helmet

The Nasal Bascinet is a helm featuring a big nose. It offers pretty good vision, and breathing, the Nasal plate offers a chunky piece of steel in front of the sport cage and chain mail to protect your soft fleshy bits underneath. Repair wise the most you’ll need to do commonly is chain mail and aventail repair. With the worst case being welds to fix the sports bar. The nasal is so common a helm, it’s also the helm by which we judge other helms.

  • Vision and Breathability: 4/5

    • Great forward vision, looking down can be hampered looking through chain mail but that’s not the worst, breathing though chainmail isn’t the greatest thing in the world but in terms of helmets is a lot better than through a couple of air holes.

  • Repair needs: 4/5

    • Very little needs to be done to fix these helms, other than occasional chain mail repair

  • Cost: 5/5

    • In terms of helms you’ll find these all day around 700-900 USD. You can’t beat that value! Nasals are common on the used gear marketplace as well at a good price

  • Practicality: 4.5/5

    • This helm does it all and does it well! Can’t go wrong with the classic Nasal, it’s been around for the entire sport’s history and for good reason!

  • Style Points: 2/5

    • I mean come on you look like Squidward, I guess that might be your thing but compared to other options it just isn’t as cool in our opinion

Overall score: 3.9
